The Indian cricket team is in great form , they have continued their winning streak and beat Srilanka in the 1st encounter at dambulla easily.

Dashing Indian opener Virendra Shewag is returning to play in this match for India,  this will be the only change in the Indian side while Srilanka will play with the same side that played the 1st ODI.

Sri Lanka really  have played well at this pitch and  have an excellent record in Colombo ,  they have won 45 ODIs and lost only 19 .

India’s record at this venue is not so good as  they have won 12 and lost 16. Against hosts Sri Lanka, they’ve won 7 and lost 13.

Pitch News :The pitch at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo is a dry one and is expected to favour batting. However, sri Lankan Captain  Mahela J said the bowlers will benefit in the first 10 overs under lights. Going by the recent trend, the side winning the toss may well opt to bat first.

India (probable) 1 Sachin Tendulkar, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Suresh Raina, 5 Yuvraj Singh, 6 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Pragyan Ojha, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Munaf Patel.

Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 5 Thilina Kandamby, 6 Chamara Kapugedera, 7 Thilan Thushara, 8 Farveez Maharoof, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 Ajantha Mendis

Australia v South Africa 2009 1st ODI @ MCG ,CB Series Full Highlights*HQ*

Aus Batting

SA - I

SA - II

()

For Complete Cricket Highlights Click Here: Watch SA vs Australia - 1st One Day match at Melbourne (MCG) from the CB Series 2009, played on January 16, 2009.

Albie Morkel 40 (18) with hitting reminiscent of his IPL (Chennai) performances pulled South Africa out of a losing situation to make for an exciting finish to the game.

Scoreline: Aus: 271/8. Shaun Marsh 79 (97), David Hussey 52 (50)
SA: Win, with 3 deliveries to go. Albie Morkel 40 (18), JP Duminy 71 (93), Neil McKenzie 63 (80).

Shaun Marsh finally struck some form and strung a decent partnership with a lucky Ponting before Australia finished quite well, getting 32 runs off the last 3 overs.

Herschelle Gibbs looked cool and then got out in the 20s. Duminy who has been strutting different facets in each game he’s turned out in, played a 70 run knock that didn’t have a single boundary in it and yet was perfect for this sort of a chase. McKenzie turned all nonsense about form on its head with important blows that got the run-rate moving. But there were twists to follow with SA almost adding to the mess they’d created while fielding, losing 4 quick wickets. In earlier times you’d be shaking your head with South Africa 7 down and another 50 to get. But those who watched Albie in the IPL were instead nodding vigorously - Captain Botha though, added drama playing out some dot balls, but by then it was less than run-a-ball. A fantastic knock by Morkel that won him the Man of the Match.

Math : 1st ODI

Teams : Australia, South Africa

Friday, January 16

Start time 2.15pm (03.15 GMT)

Team news

Ryan Harris is the only player in Australia’s 13-man squad who will definitely miss out but they have not yet decided whether to include Nathan Hauritz. The call will come down to the condition of the pitch on the morning of the game, although it is more likely they will enter with a three-man fast-bowling unit, the allrounder James Hopes and the spin of Cameron White and David Hussey. Brad Haddin returns to the side after being rested for the Twenty20s, as does Michael Clarke, who was declared fit despite battling a thumb injury. Australia’s other main question is who should open with Shaun Marsh. Matthew Hayden has retired and Shane Watson is injured, so it will probably be either Clarke or James Hopes, both of whom have taken the role in the past.

Australia (probable) 1 Shaun Marsh, 2 Michael Clarke, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 David Hussey, 6 Cameron White, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 James Hopes, 9 Nathan Bracken, 10 Ben Hilfenhaus, 11 Shaun Tait.

South Africa have given no indication as to the makeup of their starting line-up, although AB de Villiers and Jacques Kallis are both expected to be fit having missed the second Twenty20. They will be hoping for a strong effort from Herschelle Gibbs, who struggled in the shorter games having not played for the past month due to his alcohol rehabilitation programme. They have already signalled a rotation system for their fast men, particularly the Test bowlers, so it’s unlikely that all of Dale Steyn, Makhaya Ntini and Morne Morkel will play.

South Africa (possible) 1 Herschelle Gibbs, 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 AB de Villiers, 5 JP Duminy, 6 Vaughn van Jaarsveld, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Albie Morkel, 9 Morne Morkel, 10 Johan Botha (capt), 11 Dale Steyn.

Watch out for …

Michael Clarke was one of Australia’s most in-form batsmen in the Test series and having carried a thumb problem since the Perth Test he will be refreshed after being rested for the Twenty20s. An increasingly important leader on the field, Clarke might also be called upon to open the innings as Australia search for a replacement for the injured Shane Watson to partner Shaun Marsh. If Clarke’s form continues, a big one-day score cannot be far away.

JP Duminy was South Africa’s best player in both the Twenty20 games, when he kept his head as those around him lost theirs. A pair of composed half-centuries indicated his outstanding form from the Test series would not be put away along with his white clothing. He could be South Africa’s key batsman in these five ODIs and if he gets an opportunity to bat early, he must be a strong chance to post his first one-day international century.

Pakistan Cricket Board has emended the fixtures of the home series against Sri Lanka. “On the request of Sri Lankan Cricket Board the itinerary of Sri Lankan Cricket Team tour to Pakistan for 3 ODIs has been changed,” PCB said in a statement.

Karachi will now host back to back one-day internationals on January 20 and 21 at National Stadium Karachi with Lahore hosting the final match of the series on January 24.

Earlier, the matches were scheduled to be played at Karachi January 21, followed by Multan on January 24 whereas Lahore had to host the final ODI at Gaddafi Stadium on January 27.

Sri Lanka's tour of Pakistan will be split into two legs. After the one-day games, Lankans will return home for a five-match one-day series against India, then return to Pakistan for two tests.

Australia have won by six wickets with seven deliveries remaining. They bowled well to keep South Africa to under 160, and chased it down comfortably in the end. The openers didn't click, and the run rate had reached a tizzy at one stage. Then Hussey and Ponting formed a partnership, only for two wickets to fall in relative succession. But Hussey kept his cool and found a confident ally in White, and the duo finished the match. A lot of stunning hits in their 69-run stand in just 5.5 overs, but each enjoyed reprieves from the South African fielders. Australia win the Twenty20 series 2-0.

The Man of the Match is Michael Hussey for his unbeaten half-century.

First up is Botha: "You need to take your chances if you want to be a really good side. We had to try different things but it didn't work out. We can compete with Australia, and hopefully we can nip a few in the one-day series."

Now Ponting steps forward: "We've had great crowds. The players are enjoying it too. We felt that total was chaseable. It was slow at the top but Hussey and White chased brilliantly. Our all-round skills have been pretty good."

The Australian team huddles together with the trophy while the shutterbugs go into overdrive.

Hope you have enjoyed the coverage.

KFC Twenty20 preview

The focus shifts to the Gabba for Tuesday's second KFC Twenty20 International between Australia and South Africa, where an expected sell-out crowd will be praying for a repeat of the sensational hitting that made David Warner's international debut truly unforgettable.

Warner's explosive 89 from 43 deliveries at the MCG on Sunday - lauded by skipper Ricky Ponting as 'special clean striking' comparable to Adam Gilchrist's best - set up the hosts for a comfortable 52-run victory.

The question now is, can the 22-year-old back it up?

With just a handful of eye-catching KFC Twenty20 Big Bash and Ford Ranger Cup performances for New South Wales to his credit and no first class experience at all, Warner was accompanied to the crease at the 'G' on Sunday by an element of speculation.

Any queries about whether he could reproduce his domestic form at international level were resolved quick smart however, when he helped himself to four sixes and five fours from his first 18 deliveries.

A star had arrived.

But what Warner needs to deal with in Brisbane that he didn't in Melbourne is the expectation of the public that's elevated him from being a bit player with a big reputation to the game's No.1 attraction on the strength of one innings.

How he copes will have a huge bearing on the result and will tell the cricket world whether he's as hard-headed as he is hard-hitting.

Paceman Ryan Harris, left out of the starting line-up in game one, looks a nice fit for an Australian debut at 'home' at the Gabba, but it's unlikely that he'll displace Shaun Tait, whose return to international cricket on Sunday was almost as dazzling as Warner's.

Up in the mid-150s from his opening delivery, Tait almost decapitated Jacques Kallis before striking AB de Villiers on the right hip which reduced the Proteas star batsman to a crumpled heap and cost him his wicket when he dropped his bat on the stumps.

The South Africans were shell-shocked after the MCG debacle, but they will regroup, renovate their game plan and come out hard in Brisbane.

The tourists' five limited-overs specialists drafted into Sunday's starting line-up - Herschelle Gibbs, Albie Morkel, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Vaughn van Jaarsveld and skipper Johan Botha - will be better for the run.

And the Proteas will have seen enough of Warner to at least be able to formulate a strategy - something that was missing in the critical early stages in Melbourne.

Australia v South Africa 1st Twenty20, Melbourne - Preview

Melbourne: Luke Ronchi has replaced an over-burdened Brad Haddin in the Australian team for the two Twenty20 International matches against South Africa at the MCG and Gabba, Cricket Australia announced on Saturday.

The National Selection Panel said Haddin's workload was being managed following his involvement in Australia's Tour of India and Test Series against New Zealand and South Africa.

"It now provides a deserved opportunity for Luke Ronchi to come back into the Australian squad after he impressed in the West Indies last year," he said. Hilditch informed that as per the CA policy Haddin was assessed on Friday after he arrived here and it was decided to rest him.

Herschelle Gibbs turns 35 next month but South Africa view him as an important part of their campaign for the 2011 World Cup. Those plans were derailed slightly in November when Gibbs was demoted from the national setup after breaking a team curfew.

"We're expecting a huge backlash from them in this series and they have to start as favourites. There's no doubt about that." South Africa's coach Mickey Arthur.

"It's just about, I guess, starting the series well and that starts here with the Twenty20. The big thing is we've got some young blokes who add something different." Australia's fast bowler Nathan Bracken .

ICC launches centenary year in Sydney

Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat: “Cricket gets plenty right, has plenty to celebrate and has plenty to look forward to”

“The game faces challenges but so does every other major global sport”

“Emerging stars, three great formats, medium-term financial security and the evidence of history are all reasons to smile, as is the great spirit in which cricket is played and enjoyed by millions of people across the world”

ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat today launched the global governing body’s centenary year with a simple message: “Cricket is a game that gets plenty right, has plenty to celebrate and has plenty to look forward to.”

Mr Lorgat, speaking at the Sydney Cricket Ground alongside ICC President David Morgan ahead of the start of tomorrow’s Australia – South Africa Test match, said the ICC faced ongoing challenges as it moved into its second hundred years of existence.

But he believed the international game’s three formats, its medium-term financial security and the emergence of a new generation of leading players, as well as the evidence of history and the great spirit in which cricket was played and enjoyed by millions of people across the world, were all reasons for the game to wear a collective smile of pride.

“As the ICC enters its second century, the game faces challenges – safety and security, player workload, balancing formats, ensuring a competitive balance between ICC Members, staying on top of corruption and plenty more besides,” said Mr Lorgat.

“But then again cricket has always faced challenges just as big, if not bigger, than those currently confronting us – Bodyline, illegal bowling actions in the 1950s and 1960s and corruption, to name just three. And, as a successful global sport, cricket will not be unique in facing such significant challenges.

“The key we all need to remember is that cricket has always dealt with those past challenges and is now, as a result, stronger than ever.

“We are perhaps the only sport with three viable forms of the game at international level and we are about to launch the world’s first Global Cricket Academy in Dubai with state-of-the-art facilities for the world.

“And, as a governing body that ploughs all money earned back to its Members, we have just begun investing US$300 million into the development of the game among our second and third tier Members, the biggest commitment to grow a sport outside of soccer.

“Greats of the game like Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Adam Gilchrist, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Shaun Pollock and Brian Lara may have moved on but the recent performances of the likes of Ajantha Mendis, AB de Villiers, Dale Steyn and Ishant Sharma suggest the future is in good hands.

“The start of the ICC’s centenary year gives us all the chance to reflect on the past and look to the future. When I do that I see a game that’s played and enjoyed in a great spirit by millions of people across the world, gets plenty right, has plenty to celebrate and has plenty to look forward to,” he added.

The ICC’s centenary year of 2009 is intended to be a global celebration with events taking place around the world to reflect all that is great about the game.

On the field these events include the ICC Women’s World Cup, the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier, the ICC World Twenty20 event for men and women and the ICC Champions Trophy.

And off it there will be the opening of the ICC Global Cricket Academy and the inauguration of the ICC’s new headquarters, both in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, the launch of the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in association with the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA), and an ICC History Conference at St Antony’s College, Oxford in the United Kingdom in July.

The ICC will also be celebrating the contribution of volunteers across the world through the award of 1000 centenary medals and will announce new developments to its social responsibility partnership on HIV/AIDS.

During the course of 2009, each of the ICC’s 104 Members will be hosting activities inspired by the special spirit of cricket as part of a global “Catch the Spirit” centenary celebration.

To promote this theme and the launch of the ICC’s centenary year website, catchthespirit2009, leading international stars have named their “Catch the Spirit” moments which best encapsulate the spirit of cricket.

Among those stars that can be seen on the website, Yuvraj Singh of India speaks of his experiences in Pakistan – India matches and South Africa’s Jacques Kallis reflects on his side’s famous chase of 438 to beat Australia in an ODI in Johannesburg.

During the course of the year fans will be able to upload their own “Catch the Spirit” moments onto the website, so supporters across the world can celebrate the spirit of cricket.
